AI, Trade, Taiwan Dominate Trump-Xi Talks Amid Rising US-China Tensions

Published:

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are preparing for a significant meeting in the United States, as both nations grapple with ongoing tensions over trade, technology, and geopolitical issues. This will mark the second in-person encounter between the leaders this year, amidst a backdrop of strained relations.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to be a focal point of the discussions. The US has proposed establishing a framework for dialogue with China on AI safety and governance, reflecting the importance both nations place on the technology. However, differing perspectives on AI risks and development remain a hurdle, with the US imposing restrictions on China’s access to advanced semiconductors essential for AI progress. Beijing, in response, has accused Washington of attempting to stifle its technological advancements.

Trade relations will also be a critical agenda item. The temporary trade agreement between the US and China, which includes tariff measures and restrictions on Chinese rare-earth exports, is set to expire in November. While Beijing seeks long-term trade stability, the US views these restrictions as leverage within the broader negotiation framework.

The contentious issue of Taiwan further complicates the US-China relationship. The US maintains strong defense ties with Taiwan, which China claims as its territory, opposing any US arms sales to Taipei. The potential for future US weapons deals with Taiwan is likely to be a sensitive topic during the discussions between Trump and Xi.

Beyond bilateral issues, the two leaders are expected to address international matters involving Iran and Ukraine. China’s economic ties with Iran and its close relationship with Russia add layers of complexity to these discussions. The meeting is pivotal as both nations seek to balance their strategic rivalry with the need for cooperation on global trade, technology, and security issues.
