Trump Backs Netanyahu, Citing Concerns Over Iran and Leadership Change

Published:

Former US President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the lead-up to Israel’s elections on October 27. Trump’s endorsement came via his Truth Social platform, where he lauded Netanyahu’s leadership and highlighted the strong cooperation between Israel and the United States during Netanyahu’s tenure. Trump warned that a change in Israel’s leadership could lead to increased US involvement in addressing security threats related to Iran.

The endorsement comes amid a contentious period for Netanyahu, who is facing scrutiny over Israel’s security policies, the ongoing conflict in Gaza, and the nation’s international reputation. The Gaza conflict, which began in October 2023, has resulted in significant international criticism due to its humanitarian impact. Palestinian authorities have reported tens of thousands of casualties and widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Adding to Netanyahu’s challenges, the International Criminal Court in November 2024 issued arrest warrants for him and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, citing alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, the International Court of Justice is currently hearing a case brought by South Africa, which accuses Israel of violating the Genocide Convention.

Trump’s endorsement injects a notable international element into the Israeli election campaign, emphasizing the close ties between his administration and Netanyahu. This development underscores the geopolitical implications of Israel’s leadership choices and the potential effects on US-Israel relations, particularly concerning security issues involving Iran.
