This epic film, featuring a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, brings to life Homer’s classic Greek poem. It chronicles the perilous 10-year voyage of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he strives to return home following the Trojan War.
With a substantial production budget of $250 million, The Odyssey represents Nolan’s most successful debut outside of the Batman series, marking his most lucrative opening since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. In North America alone, the film raked in $124.5 million, achieving the third-largest opening of the year, trailing only behind Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Despite its R rating, the movie managed to draw a significant audience, particularly appealing to viewers aged 18 to 34.
The film’s international performance was notably strong in the United Kingdom and Ireland, where it earned £12.9 million over the first three days. This achievement highlights Nolan’s enduring appeal and the global anticipation surrounding his latest release.
A pioneering endeavor in filmmaking, The Odyssey is the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras, delivering sharper and higher-resolution visuals to audiences. The movie premiered in over 12,800 locations and was shown on 26,000 screens worldwide, including 440 IMAX screens, enhancing the viewing experience with its groundbreaking technology.
Receiving widespread critical acclaim, the film also features a talented ensemble cast with performances by Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, and Charlize Theron. In light of the ambitious scale and production challenges faced during The Odyssey, Nolan has suggested that it may be at least three years before he embarks on directing another film.
