Finnish Leaders Dismiss Trump’s Proposal for US Control of Greenland

Published:

In response to US President Donald Trump’s recent assertion that Greenland should come under American control, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen have firmly rejected the notion. Their comments follow Trump’s statements made during a NATO summit, emphasizing that any decisions about Greenland’s governance are the prerogative of Denmark and Greenland itself.

President Stubb highlighted that the sovereignty of Greenland is a matter for Denmark, while Foreign Minister Valtonen reiterated Finland’s unwavering support for Denmark’s territorial integrity. Valtonen further stressed that issues of Arctic security should be addressed through the framework of existing defense collaborations rather than through territorial disputes.

Valtonen pointed out that Denmark and the United States are already engaged in discussions concerning defense cooperation, as NATO continues to work on bolstering security measures in the Arctic region. This collaborative approach is seen as vital in maintaining stability and addressing security concerns in the area.

Greenland, which enjoys self-governance while being part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has been thrust back into the spotlight due to Trump’s remarks. These comments have sparked renewed discussions among European allies regarding the security, sovereignty, and stability of the Arctic region.
