South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump is planning to turn his attention towards North Korea following a deal with Iran. This insight came after a meeting between the two leaders at the G7 summit held in France. President Lee conveyed that President Trump expressed it is now the right moment to tackle the North Korean issue.
President Lee highlighted concerns over the diminishing effectiveness of sanctions placed on Pyongyang due to its nuclear weapons ambitions. He pointed out that North Korea’s increasing military cooperation with Russia, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, has weakened the sanctions’ impact. Lee noted that even minimal support from Russia could substantially aid North Korea.
Speculation about a possible revival of diplomatic talks with North Korea has grown after President Trump posted a photo alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This image brought back memories of their landmark meeting in 2018, which took place in Singapore.
North Korea continues to pose a significant security threat in East Asia because of its nuclear weapons program. The Korean Peninsula remains in a state of technical war, as the Korean War, which lasted from 1950 to 1953, concluded with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty.
